Nancy was a great traveler, life-long learner and respected teacher. Nancy was born on November 1st, 1940 in Mason City, Iowa to Leon Cassius Mitchell & Mildred Mae (Howes) Mitchell. She grew up in Indianola, Iowa with a 4 year break spent in Kenyon, MN while her sister, Karen, was treated at the Mayo clinic for Polio. She graduated in 1962 from Iowa State Teacher’s College now known as the University of Northern Iowa. Her desire to learn about other cultures led her to spend her Junior year abroad in India where she spent time with Nehru & Indira Ghandi.

After graduation, she taught in Greene, Iowa for a year before joining the Teachers for East Africa Program in 1963 and living in Mtwara, Tanzania while teaching children in the bush villages. There she met and married Philip C. LeMasurier on December 6, 1964. They moved to Banjul, Gambia in 1967. While living in East Africa, they welcomed Natasha (1965) & Philip K. (1968) both born in Jersey Channel Isles with Philip’s family. In 1969, they moved to Orpington, England where they welcomed Tanya (1970). In 1973, the family moved to Montreal, Canada for Philip’s work.

In June 1977, Nancy divorced Philip and returned to her home state of Iowa with her three children. In 1980, Nancy & the kids moved to Arlington, TX where she worked multiple jobs to support her family.

Nancy was able to continue her travels through Fulbright scholarships, spending two summers abroad in Indonesia (1988) and China (1994). Nancy worked for Arlington School District for 17 years and retired from Birdville Independent School District in 2005.

After retirement, Nancy continued to work in education tutoring people in her home and working in an afterschool program. She also continued to travel, driving across the United States visiting family and friends along the way while doing genealogy and birdwatching. In July 2016, Tanya paid for an Alaskan cruise to celebrate Nancy’s 75th birthday and included Tanya’s daughter, Sabrina and sister, Natasha.

Nancy sold her house in Pantego, TX in March 2018 to move in with Tanya. She was ecstatic to become a great-grandmother to Elian T. Hansen in August 2018 and celebrated her 78th birthday with a visit to see him. She also joined Natasha’s family for a reunion at Elian’s home in January 2019. April 2019, Nancy took a cruise through the Panama Canal with Tanya, another dream fulfilled! August 2019, Nancy & Tanya joined Elian for his first birthday celebration. Elian loved Great-grandma and she loved him!

October 2019, Nancy was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She had a hysterectomy and underwent four rounds of chemo while Tanya cared for her. She developed a pulmonary embolism in February and while she was in the hospital, they discovered a reoccurrence of the cancer. She was placed in hospice at home on March 28th. She passed away on April 2nd, 2020. Tanya and Sabrina were with her.

Natalya Hansen wrote a sympathy message

“One of my favourite memories with her is when she took my brothers and me birdwatching and a hummingbird almost ran into my face. I freaked out a bit haha but she just told me all these cool facts about them and they've been my favourite birds since. She also had a huge influence on my love of photography. She brought a camera with her everywhere and I loved just sitting next to her as she showed me pictures of all of the places she'd been and all of the beautiful sights and animals she'd seen. ”
