Wilma Jo Bevins 83

With hearts heavy from the sadness of loss, her beloved family and friends acknowledge that the long struggle with illness and infirmity has ended for Wilma Bevins. She passed away Friday, 31 January 2020 at the Nova Health & Rehab Center in Weber City, Virginia where she had resided, since 2018.

Wilma was born in Kingsport, Tennessee on 22 August 1936. She was named Wilma Jo Joyce by her parents William (Will) H. Joyce and Lula M. (Williams) Joyce. She spent her childhood and school years in the Westview Park neighborhood on Lake Street and later Riverside Avenue. She attended Westview Elementary and Lynn View High Schools. As the little girl grew up into a young lady, she met and married Toney E. Bevins. His work and employment required the couple to leave Kingsport and move first to Richmond, Virginia where their son Wesley Edward Bevins was born in 1966.

For the next couple of decades, Wilma and her family lived, worked, and played in their homes along the Virginia/North Carolina coastline. Trips back to East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia to reunite with family and friends always created warm and fun memories for everyone involved. Eventually, upon retirement, Wilma and Toney had the fortune of returning home to East Tennessee, where they lived in Mosheim near Greeneville for many years.

As life always does, it brought about joy along with sadness. Wilma was preceded in death by her father Will Joyce in 1948, Mother Lula in 2004, Husband Toney in 2006, and son Wes 2017. She is survived by her sister, Bonnie (Joyce) Patrick residing in Tazewell, Tennessee. She also leaves to mourn her absence three grandsons, nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends.

Wilma was cherished by all who knew her, generosity was endless, and her talents in handicrafts, ceramics, sewing became treasured gifts to her friends and family. When the pain of grief and loss touches our lives, most of us won’t have to look far to find many hand-made, and heart-given mementos she gifted us with. A Christmas cannot pass, nor a 4th of July celebration without smiling as we remember how Wilma loved holidays and festivity. So long as we can recall memories, she will also be present and never forgotten.
